In Numbers 11:16 we read that after the people complained and Moses also got displeased, that the Lord answered by calling Moses to gather seventy men of the elders of Israel. Israel was in the midst of their journey through the wilderness on their way to the promised land. Their selective memory remembered the foods and their varieties, but not the miseries of Egypt. Now Moses got tired of hearing their cry as well and asked the Lord why He had afflicted him, declaring that he was not a guardian for the people and implying that God was. God listened and told Moses to gather those men.
Numbers 11:17 [HCSB] — “Then I will come down and speak with you there. I will take some of the Spirit who is on you and put the Spirit on them. They will help you bear the burden of the people, so that you do not have to bear it by yourself.”
The part I would like to highlight here is: “I will take some of the Spirit who is on you and put the Spirit on them.” At first this might look as if some of Moses’ amount of Spirit was taken away to be given to the others. As if Moses then would have less Spirit on him. The NKJV Woman’s Study Bible I am currently reading helped me paint a beautiful picture explaining how this transferring of Spirit actually functions. Simply with the reminder that we are lamps.
Matthew 5:14-16 [HCSB] — “You are the light of the world. A city situated on a hill cannot be hidden. No one lights a lamp and puts it under a basket, but rather on a lampstand, and it gives light for all who are in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before men, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father in heaven.”
Amen. We are the light of the world, Spirit-filled, full of fire. We are to let our light shine, that people may see the good works, our transformation, our testimony and that they may give glory to our Father in heaven. As lights, we light up a room, our surroundings and people around us. We pass our light on, but we don’t loose it or it doesn’t diminish when we do so.
The seventy men were anointed with the same Spirit, the same light given to Moses. Nothing was taken from him. God anointed them. And God has anointed us as well. With the same Spirit. We are lit, we are light and we are called to light one another. May we do so, and in such a way that the Holy Spirit spreads like wildfire.
Acts 2:1-4 [MSG] — “When the Feast of Pentecost came, they were all together in one place. Without warning there was a sound like a strong wind, gale force—no one could tell where it came from. It filled the whole building. Then, like a wildfire, the Holy Spirit spread through their ranks, and they started speaking in a number of different languages as the Spirit prompted them.”
