Revelation 4:11 [NIV] – You, our Lord and God, are worthy to receive the glory, the honor, and the power; for You created all things, and for Your sake it was and was created.
A few years ago I picked up painting again. It is interesting and inspiring to look at a photo of a person or an animal for a long time and put it on paper. You look at the whole thing, the proportions and then at the details, the colors, the perfection and imperfection. Now that I get more painting requests, I want to perfect myself. How do I get a photo of someone as realistic as possible on the canvas? Slowly but surely I realized that I have to look not only at the perfect whole picture, but also at the ‘imperfect’, lush of something, so that it is right. Beautiful white hair in a brown deer’s coat is never perfectly white. A person’s face is never perfectly oval. A blue butterfly is not just perfectly blue. I realized I had to look at a photo without any judgment. Accepting the colors and shapes. And even thén you will never get exactly on the canvas what you see in front of you; the colors of a sunset are always more beautiful than in the photo or when painted.
Revelation 5:13 [NIV] – I heard every creature in heaven, on earth, under the earth, and in the sea, everything and everyone say, ‘To Him who sits on the throne and to the Lamb are thanks, and honor, and praise and power, forever.’
Through painting I became more and more amazed by God’s creation. It is unbelievable how many kinds of animals, plants and people there are! And it’s all beautiful: the diversity in colors, shapes, sizes. I’m also always touched by the eternal joy of a dog jumping and crying (even when you go to the bathroom) as if it hasn’t seen you in years. The dog is pure, like all creation and as God intended.
I’d like to talk more about God’s creation.
Do you ever open the Bible to read Genesis? The beginning of everything, about creation? Do you believe that God carefully created the heavens and the earth and all that lives in them in 6 days and then took rest? It doesn’t matter if it really was 6 days. We also know that Adam, the first man, was probably not really 930 years old and Noah not really 600 years old. What we do know is that we can admire creation, created with such care, every day.
Genesis 1:3 [KJV] – And God said, Let there be light; and there was light. And God saw that the light was good. And good separation between the light and the darkness.
The light. The first thing God created.
Without light we see nothing. We cannot distinguish any color or shape. We work slower, we produce melatonin and we want to sleep: we are not made for the darkness. We are made for the light: it awakens us, tans our skin, opens the flowers and makes the birds chirp. Light gives life.
If we believe that God is our creator, how can we believe that He gives us what we need? Sometimes we can wait and wait for an unfulfilled wish. “God will then maybe not exist” or “God won’t grant it to me”. The irony is that when we think God doesn’t see us and we have to wait for Him, He is actually waiting for ús, with open arms and a beautiful gift in His hands: the Promise.
John 3:16 [KJV] – For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish, but have eternal life.
When we know that God is waiting for us to give us what we need and not the other way around, we know it’s up to us to get moving. We must go to Him. We need to talk to Him instead of waiting for His answer. It is up to us to answer God’s promise made long ago. It is up to us to answer God’s creation, the first thing that lived on earth.
It’s always very special when you’re not feeling well or you are struggling with something, and a friend or loved one – without hearing a word from you – puts an arm around you and says, “I know. It will be alright. I am here for you.” And what a tension you feel then falling from your shoulders, knowing that there is someone who understands you and teaches you to be hopeful. This is exactly what God does with us. He puts His arm around us, He holds us “with His right hand” as in Isaiah (see below) and He takes care of us even before we come to Him and share what is going on in our hearts.
Isaiah 41:10 [KJV] – Fear not, for I am with you; look not anxiously, for I am your God. I strengthen you, I also help you, I also support you with my right hand of salvation.
God was before everything. He created us and we did not create Him. Sometimes we think like this: we have a problem. We pray to God. So. We have done our part. Now it’s up to God to answer. And it’s exactly the other way around! God says, “I call you by your name!” “You’re mine!” “I am with you!” “Even though you go through a dark valley!” “Do not be afraid !”(Isaiah 43:1-3) Do we answer this? We often bring up something else: “God takes care of this and that. Help us, help me. Be here and there.” And then we wait. But God loves us and is always with us. He always helps us. When we call on God’s Name we feel Him extra close and that is very important. But we forget something after we ask God to be here and there. We forget His promises as we read in Isaiah 43:
Isaiah 43:1-3 [ESV] – But now thus saith the LORD thy Creator, Jacob thy Former, Israel: Fear not: for I have redeemed thee, I have called thee by thy name, thou art Mine. When you pass through the waters, I will be with you, through rivers, they will not overwhelm you. When you pass through the fire, you will not burn, no flame will kindle you. For I am the LORD your God, the Holy One of Israel, your Savior.
God was there before us. Before our thoughts, sorrows, joys, questions, desires and suffering. He even gave His only Son so that our sins are forgiven. And He took our suffering on His shoulders. When a friend or loved one is so close to you, you want to hug them, thank them, look them in the eye and express how much you appreciate them being there! I realize often and now again that this is how it works with God. Knowing that He is always there for us – when we call on His Name to take care of this or that, etc. – we can thank Him and embrace Him in our hearts, because He knows. He sees it. Before we were born.
Psalm 139:13-14 [NIV] – It was You who formed my kidneys, who wove me in my mother’s womb. I praise You for the awesome wonder of my existence, wonderful is what You have made. I know, to the depths of my soul.
Thank You Lord God for all You have done and always do for us. We are safe with You. We lack nothing. You see our joy and our sorrow. You know what occupies us and You know what we are proud of. You know our desires and know what we regret. Thank You for Your goodness, Father in Heaven, You who are always there for us. Help us stay close to you, always. Amen.
Psalm 34:9 [ESV] – Taste and see that the LORD is good; Blessed is the man who takes refuge in Him.
I would like to close with a beautiful song by Stopford, often sung at a baptism: “Do Not Be Afraid” (based on Isaiah 43).

De Schepping
Openbaring 4:11 [NBV] – U, onze Heer en God bent waardig te ontvangen de heerlijkheid, de eer en de macht; want U heeft alles geschapen en om Uw wil was het en werd het geschapen.
Sinds een paar jaar heb ik het schilderen weer opgepakt. Het is interessant en inspirerend om heel lang naar een foto van een persoon of dier te kijken en dit op papier te krijgen. Je kijkt naar het geheel, de verhoudingen en daarna naar de details, de kleuren, de perfectie en imperfectie. Nu ik meer schilder en teken en verzoeken krijg, wil ik me perfectioneren. Hoe krijg ik een foto van iemand zo realistisch mogelijk op het doek? Ik kwam er langzaam maar zeker achter dat ik niet alleen moet kijken naar het perfecte geheel, maar ook naar het ‘imperfecte’, weelderige van iets, zodat het klopt. Mooie witte haren in een bruin vacht van een hert zijn nooit perfect wit. Een gezicht van een persoon is nooit perfect ovaal. Een blauwe vlinder is niet alleen perfect blauw. Ik realiseerde me dat ik moest kijken naar een foto zonder enkel oordeel. De kleuren en vormen accepterend. En dan nog krijg je nooit precies op het doek wat je voor je ziet. De kleuren van een zonsondergang zijn altijd mooier dan op de foto of nageschilderd.
Openbaring 5:13 [NBV] – Elk schepsel in de hemel, op aarde, onder de aarde en in de zee, alles en iedereen hoorde ik zeggen: ‘Aan Hem die op de troon zit en aan het lam komen de dank, de eer, de lof en de macht toe, tot in eeuwigheid.’
Ik raakte door het schilderen steeds meer verwonderd van Gods schepping. Het is ongelooflijk hoeveel soorten dieren, planten en mensen er bestaan! En het is allemaal prachtig: de diversiteit in kleuren, vormen, maten. Ik word ook altijd vertederd van de eeuwige blijdschap van de hond van mijn vader die (zelfs als je even naar de wc gaat) op je springt alsof het je jaren niet heeft gezien. De hond is puur, zoals heel de schepping en zoals God het bedoeld heeft.
Ik wil het graag nog meer over Gods schepping hebben.
Sla jij de Bijbel nog wel eens open om Genesis te lezen? Het begin van alles, over de schepping? Geloof je dat God in alle zorgvuldigheid de hemel en de aarde en alles wat daarin leeft heeft geschapen in 6 dagen en daarna rust nam? Het doet er niet toe of het écht 6 dagen zijn geweest. We weten ook dat Adam de eerste mens waarschijnlijk niet écht 930 jaar oud was en Noach niet écht 600 jaar. Wat we wel weten is dat we de schepping, die met zoveel zorgvuldigheid is geschapen, kunnen bewonderen, elke dag opnieuw.
Genesis 1:3 [NBG] – En God zei: er zij licht; en er was licht. En God zag dat het licht goed was. En God scheidde het licht van de duisternis.
Het licht. Het eerste wat God geschapen heeft.
Zonder licht zien we niets. Kunnen we geen enkele kleur of vorm onderscheiden. Werken we trager, maken we melatonine aan en willen we slapen: we zijn niet gemaakt voor de duisternis. We zijn gemaakt voor het licht: het laat ons ontwaken, bruint onze huid, doet de bloemen openen en de vogels fluiten. Licht geeft leven.
Als we geloven dat God onze schepper is, hoe kunnen we ook geloven dat hij ons geeft wat we nodig hebben? Soms kunnen we wachten en wachten op een onvervulde wens. God zal wel niet bestaan. Of God zal het me niet gunnen. Het ironische is dat wanneer wij denken dat God ons niet ziet en wij op Hem moeten wachten, wacht Hij op ons met open armen en een prachtig geschenk in zijn handen: de Belofte.
Johannes 3:16 [NBG] – Want zo lief heeft God de wereld gehad, dat Hij Zijn eniggeboren Zoon gegeven heeft, opdat ieder die in Hem gelooft, niet verloren gaat, maar eeuwig leven heeft.
Als we weten dat God op óns wacht om te geven wat we nodig hebben en niet andersom, dan weten we dat het aan ons is om in beweging te komen. Wij moeten naar Hém toe gaan. Wij moeten met Hém gaan praten in plaats van wachten op Zijn antwoord. Het is aan ons om antwoord te geven op Gods belofte, lang geleden gedaan. Het is aan ons om antwoord te geven aan Gods schepping, het eerste wat leefde op aarde.
Het is altijd heel bijzonder als je niet goed in je vel zit of je zit behoorlijk met iets in je maag, en een vriend of geliefde – zonder een woord van je te horen – slaat een arm om je heen en zegt: “Ik weet het. Het komt allemaal goed. Ik ben er voor je.” En wat een spanning er dan van je afglijd wetende dat er iemand is die je begrijpt en je leert hoopvol te zijn. Dit is nou precies wat God doet met ons. Hij slaat zijn arm om ons heen, Hij houdt ons vast ‘met zijn rechterhand’ zoals in jesaja (zie hieronder) en hij ontfermt zich over ons al vóór dat we bij Hem komen en delen wat er omgaat in ons hart.
Jesaja 41:10 [NBG] – Vrees niet, want Ik ben met u; zie niet angstig rond, want Ik ben uw God. Ik sterk u, ook help Ik u, ook ondersteun Ik u met mijn heilrijke rechterhand.
God was vóór alles. Hij heeft ons geschapen en wij niet Hem. Soms denken we zo: we hebben een probleem. We bidden tot God. Zo. Wij hebben onze kant gedaan. Nu is het aan God om antwoord te geven. En het is precies andersom! God zegt: “Ik roep je bij je Naam!” “Je bent van Mij!” “Ik ben bij je!” “Al ga je door een donker dal!” “Wees niet bang (jesaja 43:1-3)!” Geven wij hier wel antwoord op? Wij beginnen vaak over iets anders: “God zorg voor dit en dat. Help ons, help me. Wees hier en daar.” En vervolgens wachten we. Maar God houdt van ons en ís altijd bij ons. Hij helpt ons altijd. Als we Gods Naam aanroepen voelen we Hem extra dichtbij en dat is dan ook heel belangrijk. Maar we vergeten iets nadat we God vragen om hier en daar te zijn. We vergeten Zijn beloften zoals we lezen in jesaja 43:
Jesaja 43:1-3 [HSV] – Maar nu, zo zegt de HEERE, uw Schepper, Jakob, uw Formeerder, Israël: Wees niet bevreesd, want Ik heb u verlost, Ik heb u bij uw naam geroepen, u bent van Mij. Wanneer u zult gaan door het water, Ik zal bij u zijn, door rivieren, zij zullen u niet overspoelen. Wanneer u door het vuur zult gaan, zult u niet verbranden, geen vlam zal u aansteken. Want Ik ben de HEERE, uw God, de Heilige van Israël, uw Heiland.
God was er vóór ons. Vóór onze gedachten, verdriet, blijdschap, vragen, verlangens en lijden. Hij heeft zelfs zijn enige Zoon gegeven zodat onze zonden zijn vergeven. En Hij nam ons lijden op zijn schouders. Als er een vriend of geliefde zo dichtbij je is, dan wil je deze omhelzen, bedanken, in de ogen kijken en uitspreken hoezeer je waardeert dat hij/zij er ís! Ik besef vaak en nu opnieuw dat dit ook zo werkt met God. Wetende dat hij er altijd voor ons is – als we Zijn Naam aanroepen om te zorgen voor dit of dat, etc. – kunnen we Hem dank zeggen en omhelzen in ons hart, want Hij wéét het. Hij ziét het. Al voor we geboren waren.
Psalm 139:13-14 [NBV] – U was het die mijn nieren vormde, die mij weefde in de buik van mijn moeder. Ik loof U om het ontzaglijke wonder van mijn bestaan, wonderbaarlijk is wat U gemaakt hebt. Ik weet het, tot in het diepst van mijn ziel.
Dank U Heer God, voor alles wat U voor ons heeft gedaan en altijd doet. We zijn veilig bij U. Het ontbreekt ons aan niets. U ziet onze vreugde en ons verdriet. U weet waar we over peinzen en U weet waar we trots op zijn. U kent onze verlangens en weet waar we spijt van hebben. Dank U voor Uw goedheid, Vader in de Hemel, U die er altijd voor ons is. Help ons dichtbij U te blijven, altijd. Amen.
