How can the touch of a non-physical God heal you?
Luke 13:10-13 (NVI Version) – “10 On a Sabbath Jesus was teaching in one of the synagogues, 11 and a woman was there who had been crippled by a spirit for eighteen years. She was bent over and could not straighten up at all. 12 When Jesus saw her, he called her forward and said to her, “Woman, you are set free from your infirmity.” 13 Then he put his hands on her, and immediately she straightened up and praised God.”
Luke 4:38-44 (NVI Version) – “38 Jesus left the synagogue and went to the home of Simon. Now Simon’s mother-in-law was suffering from a high fever, and they asked Jesus to help her. 39 So he bent over her and rebuked the fever, and it left her. She got up at once and began to wait on them. 40 At sunset, the people brought to Jesus all who had various kinds of sickness, and laying his hands on each one, he healed them. 41 Moreover, demons came out of many people, shouting, “You are the Son of God!” But he rebuked them and would not allow them to speak, because they knew he was the Messiah. 42 At daybreak, Jesus went out to a solitary place. The people were looking for him and when they came to where he was, they tried to keep him from leaving them. 43 But he said, “I must proclaim the good news of the kingdom of God to the other towns also, because that is why I was sent.” 44 And he kept on preaching in the synagogues of Judea.”
I absolutely love how these two passages put it into words. Jesus physically put His hands on people and healed them just by touch – which was only something for the eyes to see. For people to see that it was Him working, because He could heal without the physical touch as He does today!
One Portuguese version of the last passage puts it literally: “Jesus heals the pains of our hearts”. And putting it in this form of expression it weights even more because in truth many Christians, even with physical pains and sickness, look more to Jesus for the healing of internal and emotional pains!
And the Holy Spirit came to all – and how great is His presence in our lives to bring healing and new things. And even better, how easily and openly we can reach out to Him and ask for healing and pour out our hearts to Jesus!
This last summer, I started working, I’m starting to move out of my parents’ house, even though I haven’t really lived there during college, but I’m now starting my life on my own – as many of you maybe have done it already (send me tips ahahaha). And I had to find a job while I was going through my final internship. And at this job, I was called out names and I was, even, sexually harassed and touched by co-workers – this was a spiritual warfare by the enemy to make me question my identity and my value.
I love how God lets the enemy play with us to make us stronger and spiritually healthier – as we see Him do it with Job.
The truth is that my “come back” from the situation was so fast that made me question the whole situation! It was fast, comparing to other situations because of two factors. Firstly, I was and am blessed enough to have people around me that remembered me time and time again where my identity and value come from and are set upon – and that touch physically and emotionally was such a good overwhelming experience for healing.
And secondly, I opened my entire heart to God. I did step back from Him for a couple weeks during the whole thing but when I finally saw the situation for what it was and started feeling all that I was just hiding inside, I was overwhelmed and knew only God could heal everything and clean my mind and vision of what had been said about and to me. The healing was a process itself too, because initially I couldn’t let go of everything and truly; I wanted to feel everything to, in the future, be able to give testimony and help others. But when I gave in and just set myself upon God, I was able to truly feel the chains break and fall under me.
So in truth, life is literally what Jesus asked so many people to do during His time on earth – give Me your burden and walk free in Me. Today I want to encourage you to give one that has been hurting you, that has been making you doubt your identity or value, that has been frustrating and setting you apart from you walk with Jesus.. and to give it up. Give your burden and open your heart for the touch of God which can and will heal anything!
