This time I was inspired with the topic of this blog by a person I met this week who touched me with her story when we realized that we share the faith in Christ.
She said: “It’s unbelievable! I was standing at the bus stop and there were some young people who started fighting, except there was no one to intervene. Suddenly it was just me who acted. I said it was terrible to fight and I would call the police if it didn’t stop. But why didn’t anyone else stand up and raise their voice? Today we live in a society where we lay flowers after a terrible event instead of giving the flowers to prevent this horrible drama.”
She told me the true and unfortunate reality here. Fortunately, I still believe and see around me that there is a lot of love, warmth and an eye for each other. There are people who look out for each other, who persevere in difficult times or discontent in a family, who keep hope and act out of a habit of going to a relative or someone who needs ‘someone’. Finally, we are also called to this:
John 15:12 [NLT] — “This is my commandment: Love each other in the same way I have loved you.”
Loving each other. That is sometimes easier said than done. We may love our spouse or parents or children unconditionally, but when our human irritation or impatience strike up, can we still do this? This is very human if we don’t always get it right. God knows us and that is why He asks us to go much further:
Matthew 5:44 [NLT] — “But I say, love your enemies! Pray for those who persecute you!”
Loving your enemies is sometimes an impossible question, but if we succeed we will understand why God asks this of us. I’d like to go deeper into this another time.
Acts 7:3 [NLT] — “God told him, ‘Leave your native land and your relatives, and come into the land that I will show you.’”
When I literally left ‘my country’ to emigrate to France and build a life with my husband, I thought a lot about this verse from Acts. At the beginning it is a cool adventure, but soon the loneliness and the missing of family, friends and habits of ‘the home front’ set in. I really didn’t understand what God wanted with this emigration, although I knew it had been the right choice for us as a couple. My husband had a stable job and I already spoke French and in personal prayer we noticed that God wanted to lead us to France.
Hebrews 11:8 [NLT] — “It was by faith that Abraham obeyed when God called him to leave home and go to another land that God would give him as his inheritance. He went without knowing where he was going.”
Now, 1.5 years later I still miss my family, friends and habits, but I now see where God wanted us and in every detail. We are active in our parish in music, active for the students and we have great encounters. We have a job and there are many things in development. We feel that we are meaningful to many around us every day and that at the same time we can source well in a super vibrant parish; other people here are also important to us. Yet it remains a journey of discovery where we must work closely with our God every step we take. And luckily we continue to see our family, not as easy as going for a coffee, but a few times a year we have our time together.
Leaving your country can be a symbol of giving up your habits and your comforts to be in the “land” that God is showing us; our calling, our calling for here and now. Do you believe that? Can I really let go of my comfort and act now according to God’s plan? But what is God’s plan?
In Thessalonians 5:16-18 (NLT), Paul says:
“Always be joyful. Never stop praying. Be thankful in all circumstances, for this is God’s will for you who belong to Christ Jesus.”
In all circumstances. We humans are so focused on the negative. This is striking and very tiring, but also very logical, especially when things don’t go smoothly. By also looking at the negative sides, we lose our safety. This survival system is important, but we can lose ourselves in it. God knows this, and so He teaches us to rejoice, to be thankful for all that we can be thankful for, and to pray for all that we need Him most.
Revelation 18:4 [NLT] — “Then I heard another voice calling from heaven, “Come away from her, my people. Do not take part in her sins, or you will be punished with her.”
God’s plan is already revealed in the first chapter of Genesis:
Genesis 1:11 [NLT] — “Then God said, “Let the land sprout with vegetation—every sort of seed-bearing plant, and trees that grow seed-bearing fruit. These seeds will then produce the kinds of plants and trees from which they came.” And that is what happened.”
God calls us to save all lost things, to bear witness to His love in a dry world full of hatred and to bear fruit. To share the living water which represents the Holy Spirit and its fruits:
Galatians 5:22-23 [NLT] — “But the Holy Spirit produces this kind of fruit in our lives: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control.”
It is the Holy Spirit who produces spiritual fruit in us if we give Him the chance. The fruit of the Spirit is the character of Christ formed in us so that we can show the world who He really is.
We can say, “You know… I’m having a busy period right now, I’ll focus on this later.” But God is calling us now, now is the time! It’s like flipping a switch, making a radical change in our habits. It’s like a decision to put on worship music early in the morning before we go to work that can change our whole day. If we thank God in everything and allow His Holy Spirit to manifest itself in, for example, the above fruits, we will go through another day. Give it a try. Do you begin the day with Him in gratitude, knowing that He guides us and calls us to step out of our comfort zone. Not to suffer, no, not at all! To be in the service of His Great Work that gives us and all those around us more joy and liberation than we can imagine.
I like to end with a song that I like to sing when I want to remind myself (and those around me) of our mission as people of God. “Come, now is the time to worship him!” and then go back into the day, knowing that God is doing great things through us.

Kom, Nu Is de Tijd!
Deze keer werd ik voor het onderwerp van deze blog geïnspireerd door een persoon die ik deze week ontmoette en die me raakte met haar verhaal toen we ons realiseerden dat we het geloof in Christus delen.
Ze zei: “Het is ongelooflijk! Ik stond bij de bushalte en er waren enkele jonge mensen die begonnen te vechten, behalve dat er niemand was die wilde ingrijpen. Plotseling was ik het alleen die handelde. Ik zei dat het verschrikkelijk was om te vechten en ik de politie zou bellen als het niet stopte. Maar waarom stond niemand anders op en verhief zijn stem? Vandaag leven we in een samenleving waar we bloemen neerleggen na een verschrikkelijk evenement in plaats van de bloemen te geven om dit afschuwelijke drama te voorkomen.”
Ze vertelde me hier de ware en ongelukkige realiteit. Ik geloof en zie gelukkig nog om me heen dat er veel liefde, warmte is en oog is voor elkaar. Er zijn mensen die naar elkaar omzien, die doorzetten in moeilijke tijden of onvrede in een gezin, die hoop houden en handelen uit een gewoonte langs een familielid te gaan of iemand die ‘iemand’ nodig heeft. Tenslotte zijn we hier ook toe geroepen:
Johannes 15:12 — “Mijn gebod is dat jullie elkaar liefhebben zoals Ik jullie heb liefgehad.”
Elkaar liefhebben. Dat is soms makkelijker gezegd dan gedaan. Misschien houden we onvoorwaardelijk van onze echtgenoot of ouders of kinderen, maar als onze menselijke irritatie of ongeduld op speelt, kunnen we dit dan nog steeds? Dit is heel menselijk als we het niet altijd goed kunnen. God kent ons en daarom vraagt Hij ons juist om nog veel verder te gaan:
Mattheüs 5:44 — “Maar ik zeg je: heb je vijanden lief, zegen degenen die je vervloeken, doe goed aan degenen die je haten en bid voor degenen die je slecht behandelen en vervolgen.”
Je vijanden liefhebben is soms een onmogelijke vraag, maar als we erin slagen zullen we begrijpen waarom God dit van ons vraagt. Ik ga hier graag een andere keer op in.
Handelingen 7:3 [BB] — “God zei tegen hem: ‘Vertrek uit je land en verlaat je familie. Reis naar het land dat Ik je zal wijzen.'”
Toen ik letterlijk uit ‘mijn land’ vertrok door te emigreren naar Frankrijk en om met mijn man een leven op te bouwen, dacht ik heel veel aan deze tekst uit Handelingen. Aan het begin is het een gaaf avontuur maar al gauw komt de eenzaamheid en het gemis van familie, vrienden en gewoontes van ‘het thuisfront’. Ik snapte echt niet wat God nou wilde met deze emigratie, al wist ik dat het de juiste keuze was geweest voor ons koppel. Mijn man had een stabiele baan en ik sprak al Frans en in persoonlijk gebed merkten we dat God ons naar Frankrijk wilde leiden.
Hebreeën 11:8 — “Door het geloof is Abraham, toen hij geroepen werd, gehoorzaam geweest om weg te gaan naar de plaats die hij tot een erfdeel ontvangen zou. En hij is weggegaan zonder te weten waar hij komen zou.”
Nu, 1,5 jaar later voel ik nog altijd het gemis van mijn familie, vrienden en gewoontes, maar ik zie nu waar God ons hebben wilde en in elk detail. We zijn actief in onze parochie in de muziek, actief voor de studenten en we hebben mooie ontmoetingen. We hebben een baan en er zijn veel dingen in de ontwikkeling. We voelen dat we elke dag van betekenis zijn voor velen om ons heen en dat we tegelijkertijd goed kunnen bronnen in een super levende parochie; andere mensen hier zijn ons ook van betekenis. Toch blijft het een ontdekkingsreis waar we elke stap die we zetten nauw moeten samenwerken met onze God. En gelukkig blijven we onze familie zien, niet zo simpel zo even op de koffie maar een paar keer per jaar hebben we tijd voor elkaar.
Het verlaten van je land kan een symbool zijn voor het opgeven van je gewoonten en je comfort om in het “land” te zijn dat God ons toont; onze roeping, onze roeping voor hier en nu. Geloof je dat? Kan ik mijn comfort echt loslaten en nu handelen volgens Gods plan? Maar wat is Gods plan?
In Thessalonicenzen 5:16-18 zegt Paulus:
“Wees altijd blij. Bid zonder ophouden, spreek uw dankbaarheid uit in alle omstandigheden, want het is de wil van God voor u in Jezus Christus. God wil dat alle gelovigen blij zijn, bidden en hun dankbaarheid jegens hem uiten, ongeacht de omstandigheden.”
Ongeacht de omstandigheden. Wij mensen zijn zo gefocust op het negatieve. Dit is frappant en zeer vermoeiend maar ook heel logisch, zeker als dingen niet vanzelf gaan. Door ook naar de negatieve kanten te kijken incasseren we onze veiligheid. Dit overlevingssysteem is van belang, echter kunnen we ons er goed in verliezen. God weet dit, en daarom leert Hij ons ons te verheugen, dankbaar te zijn voor alles waar we dankbaar voor kunnen zijn en biddend voor alles waar we Hem het hardst nodig hebben.
Openbaring 18:4 — “En ik hoorde een andere stem uit de hemel zeggen: Ga uit van haar, mijn volk, opdat u geen deelgenoot wordt van haar zonden, en opdat u niet ontvangt van haar plagen.”
Gods plan wordt al geopenbaard in het eerste hoofdstuk van Genesis:
Genesis 1:11 — “Toen zei God: Laat de aarde bedekt worden met groen, met zaaddragend gewas, met vruchtbomen die naar hun aard vrucht dragen op de aarde en hun zaad in zich hebben.”
God roept ons op om alle verloren dingen te redden, om te getuigen van Zijn liefde in een droge wereld vol haat en om vrucht te dragen. Om het levende water te delen wat staat voor de Heilige Geest en Zijn vruchten:
Galaten 5:22 — “Maar de vrucht van de Geest is naastenliefde, vreugde, vrede, geduld, vriendelijkheid, goedheid, lankmoedigheid, zachtmoedigheid, geloof, bescheidenheid, zelfbeheersing en kuisheid.”
Het is de Heilige Geest die geestelijke vruchten in ons voortbrengt als we Hem de kans geven. De vrucht van de Geest is het karakter van Christus dat in ons wordt gevormd, zodat we de wereld kunnen laten zien wie Hij werkelijk is.
We kunnen zeggen: ‘Weet je… Ik heb nu een drukke periode, ik focus me hier later op’. Maar God roept ons nu, nu is de tijd! Het is een knop omzetten, iets radicaal in onze gewoonten veranderen. Het is net als een besluit worship muziek op te zetten in vroege ochtend voor ons werk dat heel onze dag kan veranderen. Als we God danken in alles en Zijn Heilig Geest toelaten die zich manifesteert in bijvoorbeeld de bovenstaande vruchten, gaan we een dag anders door. Probeer het eens. Begin je dag met Hem in alle dankbaarheid, wetende dat Hij ons leidt en ons roept om uit onze comfortzone te gaan. Niet om te lijden, nee, juist niet! Om in dienst te staan van Zijn Grote Werk dat ons en alle mensen om ons heen meer vreugde en bevrijding geeft dan we ons kunnen indenken.
Ik sluit graag af met een lied dat ik graag zing als ik mezelf (en mijn omgeving) wil herinneren aan onze missie als mensen van God. “Kom, nu is de tijd om hem te aanbidden!” en ga dan de dag weer in, wetende dat God grote dingen doet door ons heen.

Maintenant, C’est L’heure!
Cette fois, j’ai été inspiré pour le sujet de ce blog par une personne que j’ai rencontrée cette semaine. Cette personne m’a touché par son histoire spontanée et touchante lorsque nous avons réalisé que nous partagions la foi en Christ.
Elle a dit: “C’est incroyable! J’étais debout à l’arrêt de bus et il y avait des jeunes qui ont commencé à se battre, sauf qu’il n’y avait personne qui voulait intervenir et du coup c’était moi qui ai agi. J’ai dit que c’était terrible de se battre et que j’allais appeler la police si ça ne s’arrêtait pas. Mais pourquoi personne ne s’est-il levé et n’a-t-il pas élevé la voix ? Aujourd’hui, nous vivons dans une société où nous déposons des fleurs après un événement horrible au lieu de donner les fleurs pour éviter cet événement malheureux.”
Elle m’a montré la vraie et malheureuse réalité ici. Heureusement, je crois et vois toujours autour de moi qu’il y a beaucoup d’amour, de chaleur et des rencontres pleines de joie. Il y a des gens qui prennent soin les uns des autres, qui persévèrent dans les moments difficiles ou le mécontentement d’une famille, qui gardent espoir et agissent par habitude d’aller chez un proche ou quelqu’un qui a besoin de « quelqu’un ». Enfin, nous sommes également appelés à ceci:
Jean 15:12 — “Mon commandement est que vous vous aimiez les uns les autres comme je vous ai aimés.”
S’aimer. C’est parfois plus facile à dire qu’à faire. Nous pouvons aimer notre conjoint, nos parents ou nos enfants inconditionnellement, mais lorsque notre irritation ou notre impatience humaine s’estompe, pouvons-nous toujours le faire? C’est très humain si nous ne faisons pas toujours les choses correctement. Dieu nous connaît et c’est pourquoi Il nous demande d’aller encore plus loin:
Matthieu 5:44 — “Mais moi, je vous dis: Aimez vos ennemis, bénissez ceux qui vous maudissent, faites du bien à ceux qui vous haïssent, et priez pour ceux qui vous maltraitent et qui vous persécutent.”
Aimer ses ennemis est parfois une question impossible, mais si nous réussissons, nous comprendrons pourquoi Dieu nous demande cela. J’aimerais y revenir une autre fois.
Actes 7:3 — “Dieu lui dit : ‘Sortez de votre pays et quittez votre famille. Voyagez vers le pays que je vous montrerai.”
Quand j’ai littéralement quitté « mon pays » en émigrant vers France et en construisant une vie avec mon mari, j’ai beaucoup réfléchi à ce texte d’actes. Au début, c’est une aventure cool, mais bientôt la solitude et le manque de famille m’est venu, d’amis et les habitudes de mon pays qui me mangent. Je ne comprenais vraiment pas ce que Dieu voulait avec cette émigration, même si je savais que c’était le bon choix pour notre couple. Mon mari avait un travail stable et je parlais déjà français et pendant la prière personnelle nous avons remarqué que Dieu voulait nous conduire vers la France.
Hébreux 11:8 — “C’est par la foi qu’Abraham, lors de sa vocation, obéit et partit pour un lieu qu’il devait recevoir en héritage, et qu’il partit sans savoir où il allait.”
Maintenant, 1,5 ans plus tard, je ressens toujours la distance géographique de moi en de ma famille, de mes amis et de mes habitudes, mais je vois maintenant où Dieu nous a voulus et dans les moindres détails. Nous sommes actifs dans notre paroisse en musique, actifs pour les étudiants et nous faisons de belles rencontres. Nous avons un travail et il y a beaucoup de choses en développement. Nous sentons que nous pouvons être présentes pour beaucoup de gens autour de nous chaque jour et qu’en même temps nous pouvons bien nous approvisionner dans une paroisse super dynamique; d’autres personnes ici sont également importantes pour nous. Pourtant, cela reste un voyage de découverte où nous devons travailler en étroite collaboration avec notre Dieu à chaque pas que nous faisons. Et heureusement, nous continuons à voir notre famille, pas si simple que de prendre un petit café, mais quelques fois par an nous avons du temps l’un pour l’autre.
Quitter son pays peut être un symbole d’abandon de ses habitudes et de son confort pour être dans le « pays » que Dieu nous montre; notre vocation, notre vocation ici et maintenant. Tu crois cela? Puis-je vraiment abandonner mon confort et agir maintenant selon le plan de Dieu? Mais quel est le plan de Dieu?
Dans Thessaloniciens 5:16-18, Paul dit:
“Soyez toujours heureux. Priez sans cesse, exprimez votre gratitude en toutes circonstances, car c’est la volonté de Dieu pour vous en Jésus-Christ. Dieu veut que tous les croyants se réjouissent, prient et expriment leur gratitude, quelles que soient les circonstances.”
Quelles que soient les circonstances. Nous, les humains, sommes tellement concentrés sur le négatif. C’est frappant et très fatiguant, mais aussi très logique, surtout quand les choses ne se passent pas bien. En regardant aussi les côtés négatifs, nous perdons notre sécurité. Ce système de survie est important, mais nous pouvons nous y perdre. Dieu le sait, et donc il nous enseigne à nous réjouir, à être reconnaissants pour tout ce dont nous pouvons être reconnaissants et à prier pour tout ce dont nous avons le plus besoin.
Apocalypse 18:4 — “Et j’entendis du ciel une autre voix qui disait: Sortez du milieu d’elle, mon peuple, afin que vous ne participiez point à ses péchés, et que vous n’ayez point de part à ses fléaux.”
Le plan de Dieu est déjà révélé dans le premier chapitre de la Genèse:
Genèse 1:11 — “Alors Dieu dit : Que la terre soit couverte de verdure, de plantes portant de la semence, d’arbres fruitiers portant des fruits sur la terre selon leur espèce, et ayant en eux leur semence.”
Dieu nous appelle à sauver toutes les choses perdues, à témoigner de son amour dans un monde sec plein de haine, pour porter des fruits. Partager l’eau vive qui représente l’Esprit Saint et ses fruits:
Galates 5:22 — “Mais le fruit de l’Esprit est la charité, la joie, la paix, la patience, la bonté, la bonté, la longanimité, la douceur, la foi, la modestie, la tempérance et la chasteté.”
C’est le Saint-Esprit qui produit du fruit spirituel en nous si nous lui en donnons la chance. Le fruit de l’Esprit est le caractère de Christ formé en nous afin que nous puissions montrer au monde qui Il est vraiment.
Nous pouvons dire: “Tu sais… je suis dans une période chargée en ce moment, je me concentrerai là-dessus plus tard”. Mais Dieu nous appelle maintenant, c’est le moment ! C’est comme mettre de la musique d’adoration tôt le matin pour notre travail qui peut changer toute notre journée. Si nous remercions Dieu en tout et permettons à Son Saint-Esprit de se manifester, par exemple, dans les fruits ci-dessus, nous traversons un autre jour. Essaie ! Commence la journée avec lui dans la gratitude, sachant qu’il nous guide et nous appelle à sortir de notre zone de confort. Ne pas diriger, non, pas du tout ! Être au service de son Grand Œuvre qui nous procure, à nous et à tous ceux qui nous entourent, plus de joie et de libération que nous ne pouvons l’imaginer.
J’aime terminer avec une chanson que j’aime chanter quand je veux me rappeler (et à ceux qui m’entourent) notre mission en tant que peuple de Dieu. “Venez, c’est le moment de l’adorer !” puis revenez dans la journée, sachant que Dieu fait de grandes choses à travers nous.
